Should you swear in your business or is it unprofessional?

This is a subject that is thrown at me pretty regularly.

It is a subject that everyone has an opinion on, some more than others.

If you have been reading or engaging with my content you know that I am not shy of using swear words but it was not always like this. It took me a while to feel comfortable with this step forward in my business.

Yes, it was a definite step forward.

If you have a natural tendency to use bad language or slang in your private life, I am sure you have come across this internal battle or indeed external building site. That cement and nail kind of vibe when you are trying to put your content out there.

So let's discuss this subject.

Why now Tara?

Well, I received an email recently from a lady in the UK who politely informed me that she was surprised to see me use the word twat

  1. a woman's genitals.

  2. a person regarded as stupid or obnoxious.

and would " prefer not to have to read the language I use in the pub with my friends."

I appreciated her honesty and was rather chuffed she took time out of her busy publishing schedule to remind me how offended she was.

In true Biscuit style, I thanked her for her opinion and reminded her how lucky we are to live in a society where choice of what content we consume is at our fingertips.

It made me think about why I feel like using swear words in my content?

It all comes down to one simple very powerful word.

My opinion is this:

If you use swear words in your everyday life then use them in your business. If you do not, then do not use swear words to come across as being 'cool' or 'down with the kids.'

That is not the objective, the key thing here is to be YOU.

This is your business.

You do not work for a someone else.

We choose this route for the freedom it gives us.

Freedom to do things our way.

In today's business environment one of the most powerful attributes of a business owner is authenticity and trust. If you are trying to be someone you are not then your content will be dripping in ' who the fuck is that? ' F-Bomb.

Be YOU and concentrate on what is really important.

  • Listening to your customers,
  • Educating yourself
  • Giving value at every opportunity.

Being consumed with how you are perceived or what people might think, will cloud the true focus of your business and it will take away your freedom.

Put on those Biscuit blinkers, stay true to you and throw out that RULE book.

Why do we swear?

“Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer." —Mark Twain

Why does swearing capture our attention?

As far as your brain is concerned, swear words aren’t even words—they are concentrated lumps of emotion. They are even stored in a completely different part of the brain from every other word we know! Formal language is stored in the Broca and Wernicke area in the brain. Swear words, however, are stored in the limbic system—a complex system of neural networks that control emotions and drives.

Whoop! Did you know that?

I would love to hear what you think about this.

Have you had people tell you to calm your choice of language down?

Do you think this is all bullshit and detest the use of swear words, period?
